Latest News

Annual report
  • Exposure's report and financial statements for year ended 31 March 2010 is now available as a pdf.

Publishing

  • October issue has been published, with articles on truancy, pottery in Highgate Wood, divorce and coming to England;

  • There is a supplement on volunteering commissioned by V-Involved;

  • The next issue will be out in mid November. Articles in the pipeline on school uniforms, tomboys, growing up too fast, social media, drugs in school, coming to England from another country and a supplement commissioned by Cosmic on alcohol awareness.

  • Other potential supplements in the pipeline are learning difficulties with Harrington Scheme in Highgate (funded by Gannett Foundation) plus financial literacy with young people in care attending Alexandra Park School (funded by Santander/Britannia). There is also a supplement due for the Youth Council.
Mind Journeys supplement and regular magazine

  • Work has been continuing on the Awards 4 All funded ‘Mind Journeys’ to produce two supplements working with young people who have mental health issues.

Design

We are working on the following:

  • The well-being display panels for schools (for Haringey Teenage Pregnancy) have been printed and will be delivered to schools this week.

  • We are also working on a 32-page sexual health booklet as well as a drugs information card for Involve. We are also looking to pitch for some more design work for Cosmic (alcohol support agency) and Haringey Domestic Violence.

  • We pitched for some design work to promote a Youth Mental Health event at the Civic Centre but unfortunately the client has not been very responsive.

  • Exposure has been looking at ways to develop our design training activities going forward, with more emphasis on photography that is of particular interest to young people as it can offer more immediate results. Tottenham Grammar School Foundation has already donatedy and the United Reform Church has awarded us.

  • However our applications to Tescos and Cruddos Foundaton were both unsuccessful putting a question mark over our ‘Still Minds’ initiative working with young people with mental health issues.

  • We are still in discussions with Bank of Cyprus UK to sponsor a photography project around on local parks plus and an associated magazine supplement. We are also pitching to do some branding work for a local restaurant.

Internet/IT

  • Work continues to keep the Exposure website up-to-date on an ad-hoc basis until the funding situation clears. We have applied to Nominet Trust to introduce internet design training and to revamp the website and make it more interactive. We are through to the next round and are working on a detailed proposal in time for the October deadlines. We have also applied to Hedley Foundation to bring this work forward as we urgently want to give the Exposure website a funky new look to appeal to both young people and commercial clients. Unfortunately we’ve been informed that this application was unsuccessful.

  • Meanwhile, we have had a meeting with a web designer anyway to revamp the Exposure website, develop a new template and train our staff to keep it up to date as the urgency to make our web presence more attractive to potential funders and clients is clear.

Video

  • Work continues on the Wates Foundation funded Mind pictures’ initiative initially for one year;

  • Exposure is collaborating with IPTV, a Muswell Hill-based media company providing online video content, to launch ‘Exposure TV’, enabling young people to express themselves through producing discussion programmes that can be streamed live to the local community. Exposure application to Lloyds TSB Foundation for a pilot with young people who are NEET or at risk of NEET was successful and preparatory work has started.

  • We have produced a short video about the Highgate Wood summer pottery activity for Bruce Castle museum which was extremely well received.

  • We have been asked to produce a short sexual health DVD for the Teenage Pregnancy Unit.

Young volunteers

During the period ending 30 June 2010 Exposure worked with young people aged 13 to 19 (or to 25 if they have special needs) on the following basis:

  • Contacts: 153 (target for year set by the Youth Service: 200)
    (no. of young people Exposure has been in contact with)

  • Participants: 118 (target for year set by the Youth Service: 180)
    (no. of contacts that have participated in Exposure's media activities)

  • Recorded outcomes: 89 (target for year set by the Youth Service: 150)
    (no. of participants that have gained recorded outcomes as they work towards accreditation)

  • Accreditation: 47 (target for year set by the Youth Service: 75)
    (no. of young people that have achieved an ASDAN or AQA media award)

Other fundraising

  • Exposure has received cuts to the Service Level Agreement with huge local authority cuts looming. TP has already had a meeting with the Youth Service. The worst case scenario is that all Exposure’s funding, including staff, will be cut.

  • We are resubmitting an application to Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots to produce a series of Under Exposure supplements plus a video on the diverse heritage of Haringey, focusing on a number of established ethnic minority communities was unsuccessful.

  • We have been accepted onto Pilot Light, a national charity offering business advice to social enterprises from senior professionals to develop strategies for meeting the challenges of the economic downturn, and will be meeting our Pilot Light partners.

  • We have submitted core-funding applications to Comic Relief, Charles S. French Charitable Trust, Esmee Fairbairn, Hornsey Parochial (successful), JP Getty (unsuccessful), Henry Smith Charity (unsuccessful), to try and address the shortfall.

Good news

  • Lynne Featherstone MP is visiting Exposure to look at the Mind Journeys work funded by the National Lottery.

  • We have been asked to a host ‘I do Ideas’ event by the Young Foundation, where young people from Exposure will be pitching creative ideas to a panel of judges to see whether they will be awarded £1,000 each to make their ideas a reality.

Issue 106

Samantha
The atmosphere at Exposure is always very lively. People are laughing and joking. The staff make you feel welcome and important and always give you praise and help you when your confidence is down. I think that Exposure provides a nice happy environment were teens can hang out and further their media skills. It is nice to get out of the house and Exposure is a great place to go when youíre bored and have nothing to do, or when you just want to get away from things. There is so much that you can do like photography, film, design, editing so there is always something for everyone.

The atmosphere of Exposure is extraordinary. First of all you have the staff that are very friendly and take extreme pride in their job. The work areas are incredible. There is a corner with sofas where you can chill out when you're sick of the office work and feeling a bit tired. There is also a separate room for film production. The computers that are used for work are Apple Macs that I'm not very use to, but the staff showed me the right buttons to press. Exposure has made a great impact on the way I work because it has made me feel so comfortable and settle down real quickly. In addition it has made me feel part of the team.
