Annual report
- Exposure's report and financial statements for year ended
31 March 2010 is now available
as a pdf.
Publishing
- July's issue has been published, with articles on gangs, abuse, healthy eating, contraception
and Asperger’s syndrome.
- We are working with V-Involved (a volunteering agency) to produce two supplements on
volunteering. We are also working with Cosmic to produce one on alcohol awareness.
- We also had a meeting with the Domestic Violence team in Haringey about the prospect of
producing a supplement on abuse. We are also investigating the possibility of undertaking a
supplement on young carers, depending on funding. We are hoping to secure a sponsorship
arrangement with the teenage pregnancy team on sexual health plus associated short films
although given the economic conditions this may not happen.
Junior Exposure
- Funding for Junior Exposure has apparently ceased. We produced the last issue of Junior
Exposure in spring 2010 on the theme of ‘Broadening Horizons’, enabling children to recount out-
of-the-ordinary experiences they may have had.
- We worked with IntoUniversity, a London-wide charity. We have developed a media-training
programme for children, including the publishing of Junior Exposure, and have been looking to
submit a joint funding application but as yet nothing is happening.
- We have had a meeting with the marketing manager of Bank of Cyprus UK to undertake a
photography project with young people to produce displays for the bank’s boardrooms.
Design
We are working on the following:
- 32 page, A6 booklet on sexual health for Haringey Teenage Pregnancy Unit.
- Well-being display panels for schools (again for Haringey Teenage Pregnancy).
- Young Haringey Heroes invitation.
- New Exposure sign for front of Muswell Hill Centre.
- Staff office display board.
- We have finished a 'Welcome Pack' for new volunteers making the induction process,
and charter and constitution more accessible, following early recommendations from our quality
assurance assessment by Youth Mark.
- Exposure will be looking at ways of developing its design training activities going forward,
with more emphasis on photography which is of particular interest to young people as it can
offer more immediate results. Tottenham Grammar School Foundation has already awarded us. We
will be approaching Tescos for a ‘Still Minds’ initiative focusing, again, on mental health.
Internet/IT
- Work continues to keep the Exposure website up-to-date on an ad-hoc basis until the funding
situation clears. We have applied to Nominet Trust to introduce internet design training, to
revamp the website and make it more interactive. We have got passed the initial stage and have
been invited to submit a full proposal.
Campaigns
- Work has finished on Mediabox, a central government fund, to undertake a coordinated media campaign
on four issues important to young people. The campaign consisted of four 30-second video commercials
and four accompanying advertisements in Exposure magazine. The adverts are being shown by both Haringey
Teenage Pregnancy Unit, and Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust, as learning tools.
Video
- Our application to the Wates Foundation to fund the ‘Mind pictures’ initiative initially
for one year was successful.
- Our application to Haringey Youth Opportunities Fund to make three more Music Factory videos during
2010/11 was unsuccessful.
- Exposure produce four 30-second commercials for Cosmic (on alcohol awareness) which were well received.
- Exposure is collaborating with IPTV, a Muswell Hill-based media company providing online video
content, to launch ‘Exposure TV’, enabling young people to express themselves through producing
discussion programmes that can be streamed live to the local community. Exposure has submitted an
application to Lloyds TSB Foundation for a pilot with young people who are NEET or at risk of NEET.
- We have produced an information video for Young Foundation promoting youth leadership.
- We also undertook some film work at the Tottenham Carnival for teenage pregnancy promoting chlamyda screening.
Young volunteers
During the period ending 30 June 2010 Exposure worked with young people aged 13 to 19
(or to 25 if they have special needs) on the following basis:
- Contacts: 81 (target for year set by the Youth Service: 200)
(no. of young people Exposure has been in contact with)
- Participants: 63 (target for year set by the Youth Service: 180)
(no. of contacts that have participated in Exposure's media activities)

(no. of participants that have gained recorded outcomes as they work towards accreditation)
- Accreditation: 20 (target for year set by the Youth Service: 75)
(no. of young people that have achieved an ASDAN or AQA media award)
Other fundraising
- Exposure received cuts to the Service Level Agreement.
- Our application to National Lottery Awards 4 All for two supplements and an exhibition at
Bruce Castle on mental issues was successful.
- Our application to Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots to produce a series of Under Exposure supplements
plus a video on the diverse heritage of Haringey, focusing on a number of established ethnic minority
communities was unsuccessful. We are looking to reapply and to try and address the concerns of the funder.
- We have been approached by PilotLight, an organisation providing free business support to voluntary
sector organisation and hope to be receiving support from them going forward.
- I am working with Johann Taljaard, a volunteer supporting Exposure TV, on an SROI (Social Return on Investment)
mapping exercise.

Marketing
- Exposure his preparing a press release and longer report, with assistance from Colette Turner, to promote our ‘Mind
pictures’ initiative.

event at the Exposure office and inviting local dignitaries.
- We have been asked to help report on a major heritage project involving a Roman kiln at Highgate Wood by Bruce Castle Museum.
- Exposure received positive media coverage after securing funding for ‘Mind Pictures’ and ‘Mind Journeys’.

The atmosphere at Exposure is always very lively. People are laughing and joking. The staff make you feel welcome and important and always give you praise and help you when your confidence is down. I think that Exposure provides a nice happy environment were teens can hang out and further their media skills. It is nice to get out of the house and Exposure is a great place to go when youíre bored and have nothing to do, or when you just want to get away from things. There is so much that you can do like photography, film, design, editing so there is always something for everyone.

The atmosphere of Exposure is extraordinary. First of all you have the staff
that are very friendly and take extreme pride in their job. The work areas are
incredible. There is a corner with sofas where you can chill out when you're
sick of the office work and feeling a bit tired. There is also a separate room
for
film production. The computers that are used for work are Apple Macs that I'm
not very use to, but the staff showed me the right buttons to press. Exposure
has made a great impact on the way I work because it has made me feel so comfortable
and settle down real quickly. In addition it has made me feel part of the team.
